In Florida the second freezer usually stands in the garage, and the garage is the hardest place a freezer can work. The air around it is in the nineties for much of the year, so the compressor runs longer, the door gasket dries and cracks, and every opening of the door lets in humid air that turns to frost. A freezer indoors has an easier life but the same parts: a compressor with its start relay, a condenser that has to shed heat, an evaporator with a fan, and a defrost system that clears the frost on a timer. Most freezer repairs are one of those parts and not the freezer.
Common Freezer Issues
Freezer runs but does not freeze
Feel the air at the back of the compartment. If the fan is silent, the evaporator fan has stopped or frozen in place. If air moves but it is not cold, the condenser is clogged or the sealed system has lost its charge. We start with the condenser, because it is the cheapest cause and the most common one.
Frost that comes back within weeks
Thick frost on the back wall means the automatic defrost has failed: the heater, the defrost thermostat or the control. Frost around the door means the gasket leaks. On a manual-defrost chest freezer, frost is normal and only the gasket is a repair.
Clicking every few minutes
The compressor is trying to start and giving up. The start relay is the usual cause and is a small part. If a new relay does not start it, the compressor itself has failed, and we tell you what that repair costs before you decide.
Water or ice on the floor of the freezer
The defrost drain is blocked, and melt water freezes in a sheet at the bottom or runs out under the door. We clear the drain and check the heater that keeps it open.
Freezer in the garage that cannot keep up in summer
Before the freezer is blamed, the gasket, the condenser and the space around the cabinet are checked. A freezer pushed tight against a wall cannot shed heat. If all three are in order and it still runs warm, the fan or the compressor is tested.

My refrigerator is fine but its freezer is warm. Is that the same repair?▼
It is diagnosed the same way: fans, defrost, airflow between the sections. The freezer of a refrigerator is usually the first part to show a defrost fault.
