A washer either stops with water in it, leaves the clothes soaked, or puts water on the floor. Appliance Masters repairs front-load and top-load washers in South Florida and Tampa Bay, tells you the price before the repair and covers the work with a written warranty.
The two designs fail in different places. A front-loader seals the drum with a rubber boot, locks its door for the whole cycle and drains through a pump with a filter you can reach from the front. A top-loader locks its lid, hangs the tub on four suspension rods and shifts between wash and spin with a small actuator under the tub. In Florida the machine often stands in a garage or a closet with little air around it. Humidity keeps a front-loader's boot damp between washes, which is where the smell comes from, and sand from the beach ends up in the pump.
Common Washer Issues
Stops with water in the drum
The washer cannot drain. On a front-loader, open the small door at the bottom front, drain the hose into a tray and clean the pump filter. If the drum is still full, the pump has failed or the drain hose is blocked. A top-loader has no such filter: a sock or a coin in the pump is removed from below.
Clothes come out soaked
The washer drained but did not spin at full speed. One heavy item throws the load off balance and the control slows the drum. If every load comes out wet, the door or lid lock, the shift actuator or the suspension is tested.
Water on the floor
Where the water shows tells where it comes from. At the front door it is the boot. Under the machine it is the pump, a hose or the tub seal. At the back it is an inlet hose. Stop using the washer until the source is found, because a small leak reaches the motor and the floor long before it looks serious.
Musty smell in a front-loader
Water and detergent stay in the folds of the boot and in the pump filter. Wipe the boot, clean the filter, run an empty hot cycle and leave the door open between washes. A boot that is torn or black with mold is replaced.
Roar during spin
A noise like a jet that grows with the spin speed is the drum bearing. It is the largest washer repair there is, and on some machines it costs close to the price of a new one. We give you that number before anything is taken apart.

What can I check before calling?▼
That both water taps are open, that the breaker has not tripped, that the load is not one heavy item, and on a front-loader that the pump filter is clean. If the washer shows a code, write it down.
Why does my washer stop in the middle of the cycle?▼
It is waiting for something it does not get: water coming in, water going out, or a door that reads as locked. The inlet valve, the drain pump and the lock are the three parts tested first.
Can I keep using a washer that leaks a little?▼
No. The water reaches the motor and the control, and a small repair becomes a larger one.
Do you repair stacked washers and laundry centers?▼
Yes. The unit is pulled out, repaired and reset, and the dryer vent is checked while it is out.
Is a bearing repair worth it?▼
It depends on the machine and its age. We price the repair first and tell you plainly when a new washer is the better use of the money.
