A dryer needs three things: heat, a turning drum and air that moves. When clothes come out damp, one of the three is missing. Appliance Masters repairs electric and gas dryers in South Florida and Tampa Bay, with the price stated before the work and a written warranty after it.
An electric dryer runs on 240 volts delivered over two legs. With one leg missing the drum still turns and the display still lights, but the heater stays cold. A gas dryer lights a burner through an igniter and two valve coils. Both push the hot, wet air out through a vent, and the vent is where Florida dryers lose the most. In a house it may run across an attic to the roof. In a condo it rises through a shaft shared with the neighbors. Humid outside air and a long run make lint settle, and a dryer that cannot breathe overheats, opens its thermal fuse and stops.
Common Dryer Issues
Drum turns, no heat
On an electric dryer, switch the double breaker fully off and on again: half of it may have tripped. If that changes nothing, the heating element, the thermal fuse or a thermostat has opened. On a gas dryer the igniter or the valve coils are the usual cause.
One load takes two cycles
The heat is there and the air is not. Clean the lint screen, then feel the air at the vent hood outside while the dryer runs. A weak flow means the vent is blocked or crushed behind the machine. We measure the flow at the dryer outlet before any part is replaced.
Does not start
The light inside comes on, the button does nothing. A door switch, a start switch, an open thermal fuse or a broken belt, which on many dryers cuts the motor through a belt switch, are tested in that order.
Squeal, thump or scrape
A squeal is the idler pulley or the drum rollers. A thump once per turn is a roller worn flat. A scrape is a drum glide worn through to metal. These parts are replaced as a set, since the rest are as old as the one that failed.
Burning smell
Stop the dryer. Lint has reached the heater housing or the motor. The cabinet is opened and cleaned, the vent is checked, and the dryer is not used until both are clear.

Do you clean dryer vents?▼
We check the vent on every dryer repair and clear the part that can be reached from the dryer. A shaft shared by a condo building is the responsibility of the building.
My dryer runs but the clothes stay wet. Is it the heater?▼
More often it is the airflow. Check the lint screen and the vent hood outside first. If the air moves freely and the clothes are still wet, the heat is tested.
How often should the lint screen be cleaned?▼
After every load. Dryer sheets leave a film on the mesh, so wash the screen with water and a brush from time to time.
I smell gas near my gas dryer. What should I do?▼
Do not start the dryer and do not use switches. Leave, and call the gas company or 911 from outside. After the supply is declared safe, we repair the dryer.
